A GoFundMe account – http://bit.ly/40i0uE9 – has been set up for the family of Chloe Nuttbrock, a Kamiak High School senior who died suddenly this week.
Nuttbrock suffered an aneurysm early on March 16 and she died that night, surrounded by her family.
The Kamiak student was active in Unified Sports during her high school career. Unified Sports joins people, with and without intellectual disabilities, on the same team. By training and playing together athletes are able to develop friendships and understanding.
In 2021, Nuttbrock and Kamiak graduate Myron Swimmer were selected to be two of 30 U.S. Youth Ambassadors for the Special Olympics. The goal of the group of 30 youth leaders, with and without intellectual disabilities, was to make the United State a more inclusive place for all by acting as advocates, sharing stories, and demonstrating the values of inclusive leadership.
Nuttbrock joined Unified Sports during her freshman year at Kamiak, but she knew about the program earlier since her mother worked at the school. "We'd always go to all of the basketball games," she said. Nuttbrock said she appreciated that all athletes on Unified Sports teams are involved and that no one was left out.
"I just like being able to see everyone be included and to make sure everyone is involved, despite their disability," she said.
In 2022, Nuttbrock and partner Maddie DePasquale competed at the Special Olympics Washington State Fall Games in the Unified doubles division. The two set personal records and had a combined score that placed them first at the state tournament.
Details of a celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
