Letter to the Editor: 'To Kill a Mockingbird' is relevant, helps us better understand our country's history

Last updated 12/16/2021 at 11:55am

Suggesting that ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ centers on Whiteness and is not culturally relevant is an absurd position, particularly from professional educators. Given the context of the novel and the era in which it was written, it is profoundly relevant.

Students should understand the when and the why, in order to better grasp our country's history and the complexity of race. If that is no longer relevant in our educational curriculum, they perhaps scrap history altogether.
