Little went right for Kamiak against Monroe.

The Bearcats dominated on offense, defense and special teams in a 54-0 victory over the Knights in a Wesco 4A football game Friday, Oct. 18, at Monroe High School.

“They are a really tough team,” Kamiak coach Bryant Thomas said. “We just did not match up well. We couldn’t get anything going offensively. They had a great defensive plan. They had a better offensive plan. They were definitely the better team.”

The Bearcats jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead on a pair of TD passes from quarterback Gio Fregoso to Efton Chism III (17 and 19 yards) and a 91-yard scoring run by Blake Rybar.

Monroe score five more touchdowns the next three quarters – one run, two passes, a kickoff return and a punt return.

“We weren’t successful at anything we tried,” Thomas said of Kamiak’s offense. “We had trouble getting movement up front. We had trouble catching a couple of balls. They were physically stronger and more determined than we were.”

Thomas noted that Monroe had 20 or so seniors playing, while the Knights had one.

“We were overwhelmed for whatever reason,” said Thomas, who added that homecoming might have been a distraction.

Thomas expects a better matchup against Mount Vernon this week. The Knights (0-5, 0-7) take on the Bulldogs (3-2, 4-3) at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct, 25, at Mount Vernon High School.

Two weeks ago, Kamiak played one of its best games of the season against Cascade. The Knights led 7-6 at halftime before eventually falling 35-14. Mount Vernon edged the Bruins in a wild 48-47 shootout earlier this season.

“We matched up well against Cascade,” Thomas said. “I want us to go out and execute and compete and leave it all on the field compete to the best of our ability. It should be a fun, good game.”
