Mariner's Bianca Barragan-Lopez, Jennifer Pena Sanchez, Kayla Osborn, Nixie Tamayo-Franco, Marlin Duarte-Salazar, Ana Esquivel-Orea and Lisset Robles defend against a Glacier Peak corner kick during a Wesco 4A game Thursday, Sept. 12, at Goddard Stadium. The game eventually was called off due to lightning and will be rescheduled later this season.

The Mariner girls soccer team possesses a lot of upside.

That potential is what convinced new coach Liam Somers to take over a program that has produced a total of only six victories in the last eight seasons.

"I see a lot of opportunity for growth," said Somers, who was a volunteer assistant coach last season. "There are a lot of excellent young players. It's a chance to build a program up. We're looking for steady improvement."

The Marauders are coming off a difficult 2018 season in which they were outscored 70-4 and went 0-14-2.

A starting point for Somers is Mariner's mindset.
