Runners tackle ultra marathon

Elizabeth Burger (63) and Leah Wessler (69) run through the Japanese Gulch.

Mukilteo’s Japanese Gulch Runners held a long-distance race on the trails in the wooded, protected area just north of Paine Field on Saturday, June 8.

This was not a typical race. First off, it was a “last person standing” race, with the winning team running 41 miles. Next, it was a two-person team competition, with male, mixed, and female teams running on unpaved single track, mountain bike style trails.

Finally, the race was run on a 2.18 mile loop. The course direction was reversed after each lap. Participants had to complete the first lap under 32 minutes, the second lap in 31 minutes, the third in 30, and so on until 26.2 miles was reached. Then the timing for each lap was reduced to 30 seconds, rather than a full minute.

The race results were:

Men: Will Jones and Nathan Richards with 19 laps (41.4 miles)

Mixed: Leah Wessler and Brandon Vaughan with 19 laps (41.4 miles)

Women: Andi Skorheim and Claire Gilfillan with 12 laps (26.2 miles)
