The Mukilteo Community Orchestra (MCO) will be celebrating the holiday season at their next concert “An English Christmas” on Sunday, Dec. 16.
This free concert is at 2 p.m. at the Rosehill Community Center (304 Lincoln Ave).
Trevor Lutzenhiser, the orchestra’s conductor and artistic director, will offer a pre-concert lecture about the musical selections at 1:20 p.m.
The orchestra will be joined by the 22 voices of the MCO Chorale, making their debut performance with the Mukilteo Community Orchestra.
The Chorale is under the direction of Janet Coe, a music director and choral performance educator who serves as the director of the Mukilteo Presbyterian Church.
“I am thrilled to see the Mukilteo Community Orchestra add the Chorale this year and am hopeful that this collaboration can continue in upcoming concert seasons,” said Janet Coe, Director of the MCO Chorale. “We have many talented singing musicians in our community and it’s wonderful to have been given this opportunity to showcase their talents with such lovely music.”
The Chorale will be singing with the orchestra in performance of two “Fantasia” compositions by Ralph Vaughn Williams “Fantasia on Greensleeves” and “Fantasia on Christmas Carols.”
“We are especially pleased to perform the ‘Fantasia on Greensleeves,’ which was originally written by Vaughn Williams and orchestrated solely for flute, harp and strings,” said Lutzenhiser. “Today’s performance with the Chorale is special in that will be performing an orchestration that can be accompanied by a chorus, written by the composer Philip Lane and approved by the Vaughn Williams Trust. This is a real treat and I’m very much looking forward to this really special and unique performance.”
The first half of the concert will include Henry VIII, Incidental Music “Allegro Moderato alla Marcia” by Arthur Sullivan, Romance for “String Orchestra, Op.11” by Gerald Finzi, and “Crown Imperial (Coronation March)” by William Walton.
Following intermission, the Chorale will join the orchestra for Vaughan Williams “Fantasia on Greensleeves” and “Fantasia on Christmas Carols,” arranged by Ralph Greaves. The concert will then conclude with an energetic and fun version of “Sleigh Ride,” composed by Frederick Delius.
“We are very pleased to be able to perform these works for our audience,” said Lutzenhiser. “Each of these works hold a special holiday place for me as Artistic Director of the MCO. I’ve hoped for several years for the opportunity to program each of these. The Finzi ‘Romance’ and Delius’ ‘Sleigh Ride’ are real treasures, and both of the Vaughn Williams’ works, although regularly performed around the world, are exquisite examples of his wonderful musical sensibility and tonality. I find each performance of these to be extraordinarily moving during the holidays.”
