Last updated 10/17/2018 at Noon

The following is a statement released by the Mukilteo School District regarding a fire at Mariner High School on Thursday, Oct 11:

“Shortly after 9 a.m., a student set fire to the contents of a garbage can on the second floor of the building. A teacher put the fire out immediately, the fire alarm was activated, the building was evacuated, and the fire department responded.

“Firefighters confirmed that the fire had been put out and set up large fans in the building to clear the smoke that had accumulated in the short time the fire had burned. Students waited at Goddard Stadium for about 20 minutes while this was being done.

“After students were allowed back into the building, the area where the fire had occurred remained closed so that maintenance staff could clean the area more thoroughly.

The school’s heating and ventilation system was checked and found to be operating at 100 percent and running as normal.

Please know that the students and staff members did a great job during this incident. The safety of our students is paramount at all times.”
