Kamiak’s Anderson, Clark drop times at 4A state meet | Cross country

November 8, 2017

Kamiak's Alicia Anderson and Leah Clark run at a meet earlier in the season.

Kamiak’s Alicia Anderson and Leah Clark both made major jumps in the standings at the 4A State Girls Cross Country Championships.

Anderson finished 17th overall with a time of 18 minutes, 39.00 seconds. In last year’s race, Anderson was 123rd in 20:54.9. Clark took 33rd place in 19:00.50. She was 39th in 19:34.0 in 2016.

“Alicia made a huge jump in her performance from last year,” Kamiak coach Charley LeWarne said. “On Saturday she came into the race as fit as ever, but with the savvy mental game of the seasoned veteran that she is.”

Anderson finished second in the 1,600-meter race at the state track and field championships last spring.

“She came into the race this year with much better confidence and focus for the challenges and opportunities presented by being back in the state meet,” LeWarne said. “She executed her race really well by not only establishing her position early on, but also engaging and racing the other girls she was racing against.”

Clark also ran a smart race, according to LeWarne.

“She too engaged the competition and executed her race plan really well through 2.5 miles,” he said. “She dropped a few places coming up the hill and into the finish. But her run capped off a stellar season that places her among the best runners in the state.”

Lewis and Clark’s Katie Thronson edged Lake Stevens Taylor Roe for first place in 17:35.00. Jackson’s Anna Skoog was the top Wesco 4A finisher in 12th place. Lewis and Clark also won the team title.
