Everett man wanted on insurance fraud-related charges

October 11, 2017

Hashim Makawi

Washington’s insurance commissioner is looking for an Everett man suspected of first-degree attempted theft and filing a false insurance claim, both felonies.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler has added Hashim Makawi, 39, of Everett, to his insurance fraud most wanted list after Makawi failed to appear in Snohomish County Superior Court to face the charges against him.

A judge issued a bench warrant for Makawi’s arrest on Friday, Sept. 15. Bail is set at $5,000.

Makawi was charged in August after an investigation by Kreidler’s Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU). According to that investigation, Makawi purchased renter’s insurance on May 11, 2016. The next day, he filed a water-damage claim following a garbage can fire in his apartment. Records from the Everett Fire Department show the fire occurred May 10, the day before he bought the policy.

If you have information that may lead to the arrest of Makwai or anyone else wanted for insurance fraud, please contact your local law enforcement agency or contact CIU.

Kreidler’s CIU investigates insurance fraud and works with the Attorney General’s Office and local prosecutors to prosecute criminal cases. Insurance fraud costs the average family $400 to $700 per year in increased premiums.
