Marauder offense sputters in 14-3 loss to Lake Stevens | Football

September 20, 2017

Mariner left with mixed feelings after last week’s loss to Lake Stevens.

The Vikings scored two touchdowns in the second half and shut down the Marauder offense in a 14-3 victory in the Wesco 4A football season opener for both teams Friday, Sept. 15, at Lake Stevens High School.

Mariner coach Mark Stewart praised the performance of his defense, which shut out the Vikings in the first half.

“We did a good job of keeping them out of the end zone early,” Stewart said. “That’s a good program. We’ve got to capitalize on some opportunities. … 14 points obviously is pretty big. We just need to finish a couple of drives.”

Mariner (0-1 in the league, 1-2 overall) led 3-0 at halftime on a 36-yard field goal by Jorge Urrutia. Lake Stevens (1-0, 2-1) took a 7-3 lead on a 14-yard pass from Conor Bardue to Austen Murren in the third quarter. The Vikings extended their lead to 14-3 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jackson Grafe in the fourth quarter.

“We’re still young. We’re still learning,” Stewart said. “Our guys can see if they do a couple more things, they can play with the best teams in the league.

“They finished some drives and we didn’t. … In the end they are going to make some plays. It’s hard to keep them out of the end zone. “They (defense) did a great job executing against a pretty high-powered offense.”

Stewart was especially impressed by the play of sophomore linebacker Jody Notoa.

“He had a great game,” Stewart said. “He was making a lot of big tackles.”

Mariner takes on district rival Kamiak at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 22, at Goddard Stadium. The Knights (0-1, 1-2) lost 43-0 to Monroe.

The focus for Mariner is more consistency on offense, Stewart said. The Marauders need to pay more attention to the small details and to execute their assignments.

“Kamiak is a big rival school,” Stewart said. “We’ve got to be able to put up some points. That’s the big thing.”
