Encouraging our young women to soar | Mayor's Message


In June 1951, Luella Armstrong graduated as the only woman in a class of 175 from the University of Washington’s aeronautical engineering program.

While she wasn’t the first to graduate from the engineering program, she was representative of a time when less than 2 percent of all engineers were women.

In the 65 years since Armstrong graduated from the UW, we have made progress as a nation, and women have made great strides in the workforce.

But even in 2014, the National Science Foundation reported only 20 percent of bachelor’s degrees in engineering were earned by women.
