‘Bedroom Farce’ a hilarious slumber party

Last updated 4/25/2012 at Noon

The play “Bedroom Farce” is a hilarious comedy with a lot of human truth. It focuses on four married couples, all of which know each other.

Delia and Ernest are the patriarchs of the group. They’ve been married for over three decades. They are the best of friends.

Then there’s their troubled son, Trevor. He’s in the middle of a meltdown with his second wife, Susannah. They fight constantly. In fact, it’s a bad idea to invite them to parties – an audience doesn’t stop them.

Malcolm and Kate make that mistake one night. They’re still in the newly-wed stage, where you are still flirting and floating on cloud nine. They also make the mistake of inviting Trevor’s first wife, Jan.

She had to leave her second husband Nick at home, since he’s stuck in bed with a bad back. All of these couples have a certain level of dysfunction even though they all love each other.

Their various shenanigans play out in the course of one night. The audience gets to know these people and hope for their reconciliations. There’s a very ‘Woody Allen’ feel to the whole piece, which is high praise.

It should be mentioned however that all of this takes place in England. As such, it’s a little more buttoned down than if it were American.

Romantic comedy like this is incredibly dependent on the chemistry between the various couples, and all four couples have their own special variety.

John Klise plays the well-mannered Ernest. He’s been acting for the Historic Everett Theater for some time now. Here he is as polite and kind as he can be with a daughter-in-law.

His wife, Delia, is played by the lovely Sharon DeLong. She is making her Historic Everett Theater debut with this performance. She does a nice balancing act between kindness and tolerance.

The role of Trevor goes to Historic veteran and favorite Asa Sholdez. As the unpredictable and fallible Trevor, he manages to create a sympathetic portrayal, even as he interrupts his ex-wife’s evening by going into analysis with her new husband!!

Making her debut is Jeanine Clarke, who plays Trevor’s emotionally fragile wife, Susannah. She is hilarious as she recites self-help mantras and tries to appear normal.

Jennifer Ropella plays the almost too cheerful Kate. He scenes are hilarious as she continually gets caught in a bad position, whether it’s playing referee or hiding under the sheets because she isn’t wearing much.

Her husband Malcolm is well played by Jonathan Hawks. Although he’s been involved with various productions behind the scenes, this is only his second appearance. He makes the most of his insecure character who tries to prove his manhood with crafts.

Suzanne Soule plays Jan, the woman caught between two men. She does her best to humor them both, and she does so with grace. Her poor harried husband, Nick, is played by Charles Butler. He spends all of the production in bed.

Don’t miss this funny slumber party. “Bedroom Farce” is playing at the Historic Everett Theater, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. now through May 6. For ticket information, call 425-258-6766.
