Editor's note: This is a first of a two-part series on De-Dowble-Sa, regarded as the Founding Mother of Mukilteo.

Her Lushootseed name was De-Dowble-Sa. To the early residents she was known as Mary, the wife of Mukilteo co-founder Jacob Fowler. As the first wife and mother in Mukilteo, she deserves a place of honor as one of its founders.

We know more of her family than most native families. Her father Se-deh-ap-kan was respected as an elder in a village of Lower Skagits, such that he was one of the signers of the Point Elliott Treaty of 1855 at Mukilteo. To the Whites he was known as "Ge...
