Letter to the Editor: Chuck Wright's column educates reader on important part of U.S. history

Last updated 2/23/2022 at 12:10pm

I was enlightened – and horrified – by Chuck Wright's excellent column on the stolen election of 1876, resulting in Rutherford B. Hayes being sworn in as president. It's even scarier to realize the unethical, corrupt and downright fraudulent election practices of that time in our history mirror a very similar attempt by the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, in the 2020 election.

For any of you who do not fear further shenanigans, dirty tricks, and basically the stealing of upcoming elections next fall and in 2024, wake up and smell the stench of a corrupt wing of the Republican Party that will do everything in their power to control government at every level from town councils to the Presidency of the United States.

I urge you all to read Mr. Wright's column and, probably for the first time, learn of the stolen election of 1876. Let this be a wake up call to all of us to get involved in any way possible with honest and well-intentioned candidates running for this year's very crucial midterm elections and all that follow. The democracy of this country is at stake.
