Mukilteo School District substitute teacher Brynn Kaas (right) at Harbour Pointe Middle School Friday, Feb. 4. Kaas was able to visit with cousin Kreston Govertsen, an eighth-grader at the school.

Through the years, Brynn Kaas has worked with children as a camp counselor and as a mentor and leader of the middle school youth music program at her church.

"It's something I've always loved," said Kaas, a 2012 Kamiak graduate. "I've worked in kindergarten, middle school, and high school. It's just been a part of my life."

Last fall, her extensive involvement with youth caught the eye of some family and friends, who were educators in the Mukilteo School District. Due to the pandemic and other factors, the district is experiencing a significant shortage of teachers and paraeducators.
