The Kamiak cheer team secured a state berth after finishing second at the Spirit of Northshore competition.

The Kamiak cheer team is headed to state.

The Knights took second place in the Small Game Day division and qualified for next month's state championships.

Kamiak earned its state berth after competing at the Spirit of Northshore competition at Bothell High School on Dec. 18.

It was the team's first time competing in nearly two years – before the COVID-19 pandemic – and it also was the first time competing for everyone on the team, aside from captain Cassie Laney.

"Being blessed with the opportunity to compete has reminded all of us why we cheer and has relit the spark that was dulled by the effects of COVID-19," Laney said. "We are so excited to showcase what we have all worked so hard for, and to interact with our community in person."

The Game Day category simulates an actual football sideline situation, complete with a band dance, situational sideline chants, crowd involvement cheers, and ending with the school's fight song.

The state championships are scheduled for Feb. 4-5 at Battle Ground High School near Vancouver.
