Thanksgiving is definitely one of America's favorite holidays, but there is a deeper meaning of this day from its origins in 1621.
In the first winter, half of the Pilgrims died due to the cold, disease, and starvation. The Wampanoags Indians had kept an eye on those first Pilgrims over several months and recognized they needed help.
The Wampanoags were exemplary neighbors; reaching out and teaching them how to plant squash and beans by utilizing fish scraps as fertilizer. When fall came around there was cause for celebration, the Pilgrims had a "harvest feast" now called Thanksgiving.
