Youth is served: Kamiak's Smith claims state title

Sophomore standout wins 100-yard butterfly crown at 4A swimming championships

Kamiak's Claire Smith won the 100-yard butterfly at the 4A state girls swimming championships Saturday, Nov. 13, at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Smith also helped the Knights' 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams to top 8 finishes. The sophomore standout holds all three of her medals.

Kamiak's Claire Smith came into the 4A girls swimming state championships with the goal of finishing in the top 4 in the 100-yard butterfly.

Her official seed time of 59.48 seconds placed her seventh in the field, so Smith was going to need to step up her game to accomplish her goal.

She did that and much more.

After swimming the second-fastest time (57.79) in Friday's preliminary heats, Smith followed up with her best performance of the season.
