Affecting Our Fate | Worship

During the Jewish High Holidays we are asked to ponder our fate for the upcoming year.
This is the laser focus of the Unetanah Tokef prayer, which some say is the pinnacle of the Rosh Hashanah liturgy.
The prayer points out that on Rosh Hashanah, which starts the Ten Days of Awe at sunset on Sept. 6, it is inscribed who shall live and who shall die in the coming year.
It goes on to speculate how our death, if such is our fate, may come about – by water or by fire; by sword or by wild beast; by famine or by thirst; by earthquake or by plague; by strangulation or by stoning.
