A mandatory machine recount yielded no changes in the Mukilteo City Council Position 3 race.

Former City Councilmember Steve Schmalz finished first with 38% (2,195) of the vote. His opponent in the Nov. 2 general election will be political newcomer Alex Crocco, who edged Carolyn (Dode) Carlson by 7 votes – 23.85% (1,370) to 23.73% (1,363). The numbers in the Tuesday, Aug. 24 recount did not change from last week's final tally.

For Crocco, the close race reemphasized the importance of voting.

"I think it again makes the case that every vote counts," he said.
