Letter to the Editor: First Amendment under attack by politicians

Last updated 3/3/2021 at 2:14pm

What is happening in our country today in full view as we silently watch? The U.S. Constitution delineates our unalienable rights that we possess by virtue of our God-given humanity – not by the granting of government. The First Amendment – free speech, arguably our most important right, appears to be under attack in multiple ways. If we surrender free speech to the control of government officials and colluding entities, our free society dies. History is our best teacher in this regard.

U.S. Reps Anna Eshoo (D-Calif) and Jerry McNerney (D-Calif), sent a letter to 12 cable and streaming providers, demanding their decision criteria regarding which news channels they carry and the number of subscribers who tuned in to Fox, OANN, and Newsmax before the 2020 general election. Additional questions posed implied an intent to de-platform these networks. As the apparent self-proclaimed arbiters of truth, the signatories accused (without evidence) these "right-wing" media outlets of spreading "disinformation, lies, and half-truths." Even more telling, this letter ignored left-wing outlets that arguably spread "disinformation" for years on the now debunked Russia dossier, "definitive" COVID-19 science, Hunter Biden computer "hack," and other inaccurate reporting.

U.S. citizens possess the intellect to determine truth for ourselves, provided we have access to all perspectives and facts. When diverse opinions and facts that challenge state-sponsored opinions and facts are censured, the real truth will never be known. Censorship stamps out vibrant societies that innovate, evolve, and overcome the many challenges they encounter. Fascism destroys people.

When commercial companies act in concert with and as collaborators of a political party in power, targeted destruction of individuals, businesses, and all our freedoms occur unchecked. My father, the U.S. born son of an Italian immigrant, honorably served our country from 1942 to 1946 in the Army Air Forces. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He saw the worst of what fascism had to offer, but his generation understood their duty to literally save the world from fascism's horrors.

Today, we are being tested again. Will we preserve our freedoms or will we capitulate until it is too late to stop the censorship steamroller and its inevitable outcomes? We can stand up for our God-given rights, and we can do it peacefully. All we have to do, is stand together. Many "good people" wish they had done so in the 1930s. Oppose all forms of censorship! Reject the thought police.
