Kamiak student connects with her culture through music

My Phuong Thai is learning to play traditional Vietnamese music from Master Dr. Hai Viet Hong

Kamiak sophomore My Phuong Thai plays the dan tranh, a traditional Vietnamese stringed instrument, under the instruction of Master Dr. Hai Viet Hong. Thai was one of 15 individuals selected for the 2020-21 Washington State Heritage Arts Apprenticeship Program.

My Phuong Thai was first introduced to the dan tranh, a traditional Vietnamese stringed instrument, when she was 11.

Thai learned about the instrument and started to play after joining the Huong Viet Performing Arts Group, a nonprofit organization based in Everett whose goal is to study, promote, preserve, and popularize Vietnamese traditional music and arts.

Five years later, Thai's passion for the dan tranh and Vietnamese music remains as strong as ever. Earlier this summer, Thai was one of 15 individuals selected for the Washington State Heritage Apprenticeship Arts Program, a statewide...
