The COVID-19 pandemic we have all been dealing with has served to amplify the impact of another epidemic that has been with us for some time: the epidemic of chronic loneliness.
The insurance company Cigna, in a 2019 online survey of 20,000 U.S. adults over the age of 18, found that 61% of respondents described themselves as lonely – an increase of 7 percentage points from a study the year before.
