Jibran Karim has had a passion for reading since elementary school.

Like many teenagers, science fiction and fantasy were two of his favorite genres.

Later in middle school, Karim discovered that he also enjoyed writing. During an eighth grade English class, Harbour Pointe Middle School teacher Janine Schierbeek gave Karim and his classmates an assignment to write their own creative stories.

Karim, a junior at Kamiak High School this fall, received a good grade on his story and, perhaps more importantly, Schierbeek's encouragement.
