Publisher’s note: The Black Lives Matter movement, sparked by recent police killings of Black citizens, has led to widespread discussions on racism. In the following columns, two writers offer personal accounts on the issue. Kelvin Thomas, owner of the fitness gym Studio 373 in Mukilteo, shares his experiences as a Black man in America. Former Beacon columnist Frank Workman, who spent many years engaged in youth sports as a coach, umpire, game announcer and other positions, shares his feelings as a white man after reaching out to a Black athlete he mentored:
