State receives record number of unemployment applications

Employment Security Department has challenges with volume

With the launch of new benefits April 18, the Washington State Employment Security Department received more applications (including expanded, extended and traditional benefits) in a single day than the biggest week on record, which were 182,000 during the week ending March 28.

The 182,000 applications in a week were already seven times the peak week during the 2008-09 recession.
