Snohomish County eyes hiring freeze and other steps to preserve core services

Economic impacts of COVID-19 are expected to force significant cuts to county budget

Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers and Snohomish County Council Chair Nate Nehring announced a series of budget steps they are considering in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including a hiring freeze, eliminating any discretionary raises, canceling travel and training, and other fiscal management tools. Early budget estimates predict that the county’s General Fund budget may need to be cut by 10% or more due to the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
