Letter to the editor: Affordable housing doesn't mean more crime or drugs

Last updated 3/25/2020 at 12:58pm

I’ve lived in Mukilteo since the summer of 1998. I have found it, and continue to find this, an open, welcoming city, with a few exceptions which I’ve been asked to voice my opinion about.

There is among a few of our neighbors the belief that affordable housing brings to a community increased crime and drugs. In fact, the people who live in affordable housing are generally near minimum wage workers such as those who have worked in our fine restaurants before the current crisis, but can’t afford the cost of typical prices of housing here, and are no more likely to be criminals or druggies than anyone else.

If we expect them to provide us excellent service, we should allow them to also be able to live here, even if requiring affordable housing.
