Sgt. Colt Davis helps out the Starbucks staff at the drive-up window during the Mukilteo Police Department's quarterly "Coffee with a Cop" program. It aims to give citizens an opportunity to get to know their officers better in a relaxed setting.

It's the nature of the beast that many interactions between citizens and police are, shall we say, unpleasant.

You were the victim of a crime. You were pulled over for a traffic infraction. A squabble among family members or neighbors required intervention. Whatever the case, the police show up when negative emotions are running high.

But then, when you get the chance to talk with a police officer one-on-one in a positive environment, surprise! They're real people, just like the rest of us.
