The Kamiak Cheer Team dominated the Game Day category at the Winter Cheer Classic in Sammamish Jan. 11. The team will be heading to the state championships in February.

The Kamiak Cheer Team will be heading to the state championships at Battle Ground High School in February. A recent weekend competition guaranteed their continued journey.

The team participated in the Winter Cheer Classic state qualifier competition at Skyline High School Saturday, Jan. 11.

Cheer coach Kim Nelson said the team achieved their goal to earn a qualifying state competition score in the Game Day division. They succeeded.

She said the Game Day category simulates an actual football sideline situation, this includes: band dances, situational sideline chants, crowd-involvement cheers, and ends with the school's fight song.

"Game Day fits well with our philosophy of working to support Kamiak sports teams, but also taking these skills to the competition level," Nelsons said.

She said the team "cleanly executed a fantastic routine," which was choreographed by assistant coach Kirsten Collison.

Not only did the team qualify for state, but took second place in a division with many competitors.

"The cheer team will be working hard preparing for February's WIAA State Cheerleading Championships," she said. "I am very proud of the dedication Kamiak cheerleaders bring to their school all year long."
