A week after finishing behind Wesco 4A rivals Brenden Charbeneau and Jordan Hansen of Jackson, Kamiak's Carp Mukai came into the annual Everett vs. Mukilteo championships with plenty of motivation.
With 400 meters to go in the race, Mukai made his move.
"I was a couple steps behind them," the Kamiak junior said. "I knew that I could get them at the end."
Mukai caught up and then passed the Jackson duo to win the 5k race in 16 minutes, 41.1 seconds, just ahead of Charbeneau, who took second in 16:42.3 and Hansen, who clocked in at 16:42.8, Thursday, Oct. 17, at McCollum Park in Everett.
