Robison captures Snohomish Summer Smash singles crown

Kamiak’s Leah Robison took home top honors in the Girls Gold Division at the fifth annual Snohomish Summer Smash Saturday, July 27, at Snohomish High School.
Robison defeated Edmonds-Woodway’s Natalie Paulson 6-1, 6-4, in the singles championship match. Robison, a 4A state participant, beat Snohomish’s Maia Marks 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and then upended Lake Stevens’ Mia Nelson 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals.
Robison also teamed up with Kamiak’s Jaeden Tongco to capture the Mixed Doubles Division title. Robison and Tongco defeated Snohomish’s Adam Kowalchyk and Natalie Stern 6-2, 6-3 in the finals. The Kamiak duo beat Snohomish’s Jadyn Mueller and Lake Stevens Dillon Wells 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.
Jackson’s Brady Thomas, who finished second at the 4A state tournament, did not drop a single game en route to winning the Boys Gold Division singles championship. Thomas beat Lake Stevens’ Ethan Hoglund 6-0, 6-0 in the finals. Thomas also teamed up with Jackson’s Anuj Vimawala to defeat Snohomish’s Cade Strickland and Macen Strickland 6-0, 6-0 in the Boys Gold Doubles Division finals. Vimawala and Jackson’s Daniel Sohn won the 4A state doubles crown last spring.
Jackson’s Shubhi Handa and Naisha Sinha defeated Snohomish’s Jadyn Mueller and Lauren Riske 4-6, 6-0, 12-10 in the Girls Gold Division Doubles finals.
In the Silver Division, Bellingham’s Emmanuel DePalma won the boys singles title over Snohomish’s Cade Strickland 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 and Snohomish’s Will MacDonald and Trevor VanAssche edged Lake Stevens’ Sam Bryant and Dillon Wells 5-7,7-5, 10-6 in the boys doubles finals.
Inglemoor’s Abigail Ledsham defeated Snohomish’s Caitlyn Ren 6-1, 6-3 in the Girls Silver singles finals and Cleveland’s Melody Wyatt and Linda Lam captured the Girls Silver doubles title with a 6-4, 5-7 12-10 victory over Lake Stevens’ Kendra Johns and Ruslan Popach.
The tournament featured 67 participants from 16 high schools, from Bellingham to Seattle.
