Reminder: Fireworks illegal in Mukilteo

With the Fourth of July on the horizon, the City of Mukilteo would like to remind residents that it is illegal to sell, use, transfer, discharge, ignite or explode any fireworks within City limits, especially in parks (MMC 9.60.070).

The City said in a post on its website that it encourages residents “to participate in a regional public fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day.”

“Fireworks are dangerous, especially around children,” said Mukilteo Mayor Jennifer Gregerson. “Every year, we hear stories of young children being seriously injured by firecrackers. It really doesn’t need to happen, and I hope our residents will instead attend a public fireworks display instead of setting off their own.”

“It is illegal to discharge fireworks within the City,” said Mukilteo Fire Chief Chris Alexander. “Each year, our crews are very busy responding to emergency calls related to burns or eye injuries resulting from fireworks. This year promises to be warmer and drier, which will increase the number of fires requiring response. With July 4 on Thursday this year, the long, warm weekend will be a busy time for our crews.”

In the City’s post, it listed a few nearby fireworks displays taking place on July 4.

Those events are:

  • Edmonds: An Edmonds Kind of 4th, fireworks show at 10 p.m.
  • Everett: Thunder on the Bay Fireworks, show at 10 p.m., Legion Memorial Park Lawn, 145 Alverson Blvd.
  • Kenmore: Fourth of July Fireworks Show, begins at 10 p.m., Log Boom Park, 17415 61st Avenue NE.
  • Seattle: Seafair Summer 4th, fireworks show at 10:15 p.m., Gas Works Park.

Per the City, illegal sale, use or discharge of fireworks is a misdemeanor and violators are subject to a fine of up to $1,000 and up to 90 days in jail.

To report illegal fireworks, call the City’s new non-emergency phone number: 425-407-3999 instead of 911. Call 911 in case of injury, fire, or any other emergency.
