Second Rosehill School, 1928-1973.

Have you ever wondered what it was like to go to Rosehill School in the “olden days” over 100 years ago?

The original Rosehill School was built in 1893. It burned down on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1928. New second Rosehill was immediately built and functioned until it was closed in 1973. In 1976 it opened again as a community center. In 2011, the school was demolished and replaced with the current community center.

This was Rosehill’s first school bus. You would just hop into the wagon and get a ride to school.

There was no high school in Mukilteo in the olden days, and no real roads into Everett, so you could get to Everett High School. To get to school, you would get yourself down to Mukilteo’s waterfront and hop on the Island Flyer.

This boat would leave at 7 a.m. each morning for the trip across the water to Everett’s waterfront. You would walk up the hill to Everett High. The cost was $1 a week for the 20-minute ride. You would return home about 6 p.m. each evening.

The teacher put all her lessons on a huge slate board on the wall of the classroom. You would have your own small slate board to work on.

In 1893, there were only 29 students in the entire school. You may have had many age levels in your classroom.

By 1928, the new Rosehill had 260 students, 11 classrooms, and an auditorium.

The second Rosehill closed in 1973.

All these old photographs and many more are displayed at the Mukilteo Lighthouse complex. Also on display are many donated historical treasures from the “olden days.”

Come visit our Mukilteo Lighthouse, the museum, the interpretive center, the boat house and gift shop. We are open in the summer on Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m.
