Mariner baseball games to be nonleague in standings

Last updated 4/17/2019 at Noon

The Mariner baseball team will play out the rest of its regular season schedule after having to forfeit four games last week due to low numbers.

The Marauders did not have enough players to field a team against Glacier Peak and Monroe because some were out of town during spring break, Mariner athletic director Kyle Axelson said.

As a result of the forfeits, the Wesco 4A voted last week that all of Mariner’s remaining games and those that already have been played will be counted as non-league in the league standings.

The Marauders already had played Mount Vernon and Cascade prior to spring break. Mariner remaining league schedule includes series with Jackson, Kamiak and Lake Stevens.

Some coaches had raised fairness concerns about some teams having to play the Marauders in league games, while others had forfeits.

Axelson noted that one of the major issues for baseball teams is managing the workload for pitchers.

The hope is, Axelson added, that by having Mariner’s games designated as non-league, the contests might be more competitive. Teams might not feel the need to throw their No. 1 pitcher in non-conference games.

The Marauders (0-13 overall) were outscored 61-7 in four losses to the Bulldogs and the Bruins.
