No to Paine Field expansion
Editor’s Note: Alaska Airlines has 18 daily flights both arrivals and departures while United Airlines has the remaining six. Alaska was originally to have 13 before purchasing five slots from Southwest Airlines last year. In 2012, the plan was for the Paine Field airport to have a maximum of 12 daily flights arrivals and departures but that was doubled to 24 a few years later, which is why a new environmental assessment was conducted last year.
I don’t necessarily have the opportunity to read the Beacon each week but have read it many times since moving to Mukilteo 25-plus years ago. I am concerned that our local press is not taking a more aggressive stance about expansion at Paine Field.
Obviously, we lost the battle to restrict commercial flights (although I think we did the best we could). But with Alaska Air wanting to grow from the original approved flights of 12 to 18 and SeaTac talking about further expansion, we have a potential major problem.
The flights fly right over my grandson’s school, which is ridiculous. I am hoping that Save Our Communities or the city will be more visible in challenging further expansion - I’ve tried to find a way to work through them but haven’t found a way to make that happen.
Response to past comments
In reference to my letter of March 27, The Beacon’s comments are disingenuous.
The email of Glen Pickus entitled "Being Bold and Courageous" demanded that the city council immediately "vote to impose an additional 0.2 percent sales tax and $40 car tab."
Also planned was an addition to the property tax levy for the Transportation Benefit District, and two full-time staff were recommended even though the city is already fully staffed for upkeep of the roads. We can easily speculate who those individuals might be.
The city dodged a very expensive bullet.
