Running for a good cause

Kamiak’s Carp Mukai (270) prepares to lead the field during the Lungbuster 5k race Sunday, Oct. 7, at Kamiak High School. Mukai finished first in the race, which raised funds for lung cancer research.

The inaugural Lungbuster 5k/10k run drew a large and enthusiastic crowd of runners, walkers, volunteers and supporters Sunday, Oct. 7, to Kamiak High School and the streets of Mukilteo.

The run was organized by Amie Parker, a longtime Mukilteo School District employee and her friends. Parker, a nonsmoker, was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer last year.

Recent studies have indicated that non-smokers are accounting for a larger percentage of lung cancer cases and that many of these non-smokers were more likely to be female.
