Junior Kara Sevigny looks to be the class of the field for Mariner’s girls cross country team.

Sevigny finished seventh in the first league meet of the season against Edmonds-Woodway, Meadowdale and Shorecrest Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Hamlin Park in Shoreline.

“She should be in the top 10 percent in her races,” Mariner coach Dave McFadden said. “She’s running real well right now.”

Teammate Illona Krutiy, a freshman, placed ninth and junior Kyla Ojalehto finished 10th.

“They’re pretty close,” McFadden said. “They’re all really close.”

The three Marauders were separated by less than a minute.

Mariner only had two runners eligible for the boys races but the two are the Marauders’ top prospects – freshman Dominic Cruz-Estrada and sophomore James Smith.

Cruz-Estrada took 10th place, while Smith was 22nd. The Mariner freshman standout was the eighth grade district champion in the 1,600-meter race.

“He’s a good runner,” McFadden said. “This was his first high school race. It was kind of a rough one to start with that group of boys from Edmonds-Woodway. … It was a little baptism by fire.”

The Warriors, regarded as one of the top 3A teams in the state, placed five runners in the top 8.

Mariner has a turnout of 30 individuals with about 18 boys and 12 girls. McFadden said that he was contacted by three or four other kids during the week, who expressed interest in running.

“Our goals are primarily centered around improvement and closing that gap between our No. 1 and our No. 5 runners,” McFadden said. “That’ll be an easier goal to establish once we know who our one through five runners are. … We’re in a rebuilding phase.”

McFadden noted that he’s heard good things about runners at Voyager Middle School. The plan is to reach out to that group and establish more connections between the middle and the high school, McFadden said.
