Help is out there l Council Corner

As a councilmember, it is not only important for us to right the wrongs and shine light on any misconduct in spending and compliance with policies, it is just as important that we bring light and hope to our community when it needs us most.

The terror our kids felt on Friday night hit home for me as it did for many more of you in even deeper ways. We live in a society now that is very different than when I grew up. The thoughts I would have had racing through my head 30 years ago are just not comparable to those that raced through the heads of all those overwhelmed kids in the stands.

It is not comparable to those thousands outside that received frantic texts, calls and messages of fear, pain and confusion.

I want to shine light on the words from Teri Johnson, owner of Healing & Restoration Counseling, but more importantly, a mother of three in our community:

“We had two daughters at the game, and fortunately we were able to be at Mariner within three minutes of the shooting. The significant terror and panic I saw in all of these kids was absolutely devastating. This is an event that definitely could cause PTSD in our kiddos. I wanted to share some tips I use in my counseling practice for these situations. Hopefully they can help your child process through this incident.

“1. Empathy, empathy, empathy. Listen to their pain, understand their feelings and be in their feelings with them. Try not to tell them they are fine and need to get over it.

“2. Validate that their fear is so real and valid and how incredibly scary this incident was. You may need to do this over and over again.

“3. Respond with comments such ‘I am so thankful that you are safe.’ ‘I am so happy this is over and you are home safely with me.’ These comments will allow them to see the incident is over and could help them begin to move forward through their processing.

“4. Encourage them to talk with their friends for support and validation.

“Just a few signs of PTSD to look for: Not eating or sleeping well, crying frequenting, replaying the incident over and over again, and intense fear that continues.

“If you see your child continue to have these symptoms, I suggest you reach out to a therapist. PTSD can be worked through pretty quickly. I am here for all of your mamas or kids if you or your kids need support or encouragement. Praying for quick healing for our kids!”
