Cool learning for ‘Cool Girls’ l Mayor's Message

Two days ago, a group of amazing young Mukilteo girls celebrated an awesome accomplishment with our City Council. They were accepted into, and completed, the city’s “Cool Girls in Aerospace” summer workshop.

In partnership with Edmonds Community College and their WA Aerospace Training Academy, as well as Community Transit and United Way, we offered these 10 middle schoolers an opportunity to explore aerospace and technology careers, and to envision themselves as part of our hometown aerospace industry.

We hosted this seminar to encourage some of our bright young women in Mukilteo to consider careers in aerospace and other STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. I wanted them to get some hands-on experiences, meet some brilliant women and be inspired to dream big dreams.

Data shows that these career pathways in our largest industry aren’t being fully explored by all of our young residents. In 2015, women filled 47 percent of all U.S. jobs in 2015 but held only 24 percent of science, technology and engineering positions.

That is not because women aren’t smart enough or motivated enough to study these subjects - studies have found that our girls aren’t being encouraged to consider these careers and explore all of their opportunities.

Encouraging women to pursue careers in aerospace isn’t just about preparing the future of the workforce; the fact is that women with jobs in STEM are paid 35 percent more than women in non-STEM jobs.

Closing the pay gap between men and women means encouraging girls to explore all the same opportunities as boys.

As one participant said, she “loved the hands-on experience and discovering how the tools worked,” and shared her appreciation for memories made, new friends and a wonderful time.

I hope these girls continue developing their interest in these career fields, and expand the ranks of successful women scientists, engineers, machinists, and more.

Congratulations to them on completing a successful educational summer workshop!
