Edmonds Police are asking the public to help identify a man who allegedly molested a 9-year-old girl in 99 Ranch Market on Highway 99 in Edmonds.
The suspect is a while male in his 50s or 60s, Sgt. Shane Hawley said. He has a possible goatee, and was wearing a bright blue shirt and dark shorts.
A security camera captured the incident.
At about 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, Hawley said a mother was walking around the busy Asian foods shopping center with two young girls one of whom Hawley confirmed was her daughter. The video showed the suspect following the group several times.
At one point, Hawley said, the suspect cut in front of them, forcing them to stop.
“He reaches down, and you can see that he grabbed her private area,” Hawley said. “This all happened in a couple of seconds. He then quickly went down an aisle and out the front door.”
The girl, the woman’s daughter, told her mother what happened. The mother then called 911.
“The girl was pretty clear on her story,” Hawley said, adding that the video confirmed her account.
“This is a public place, and there were a ton of people around. You really wouldn’t expect this to happen in that environment. It’s always mindful to have your kids within eyeshot and earshot to keep (tabs) on them.
“Thankfully, these are really rare. We just don’t see random stranger violence, much less assault or child molestation in a public place. If this person willing to go this route in the middle of a busy supermarket, what’s he willing to do?”
The suspect will be charged with felony assault of a child.
In the meantime, those with information on the suspect can do so at www.edmondswa.gov/police/anonymous-tip.html.
“The more tips, the merrier,” Hawley said. “We need to get him ID’d.”
