Questions to ask | Council Corner

This past week we said goodbye to the eighth director in the last four years.

It begs the next question, “How many other employees have left the city in those same four years?”

What I know to be true through my leadership lens is that people do not leave companies; they leave people.

So it brings me to the heart of this message and it is directed to our city’s staff.

I have observed quite a lot in these first six months being your Councilmember. I want you to know that I have compassion for the position you are being put in.

I see that the information you are directed to present to us is often choreographed beyond your control.

I will take responsibly that this has resulted in my own frustration when I am hearing only one political perspective presented. I want you to know that my frustration is not about you, it is about the lack of transparency from the top, putting us both in a prickly position.

I am grateful for the team of Councilmembers I serve with because some of their difficult and pointed questions have revealed some truths that if I had not known, could have resulted in a different outcome.

So today I want to thank all the directors and staff, for supporting me and other Councilmembers in the ways you can.

You also need to know that in my two years on a committee, last year campaigning, and my six months serving in this position, not once have I heard a Councilmember say anything but positive comments about the work you do.

I value each and every one of you and hope that you stay a long while.

I can’t speak for the rest of the council, but I am sure they would agree that we enjoy working with you and are grateful for all your hard work.
