The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club has named Kamiak High School’s Owen Cromwell as January’s student of the month, Mariner High School’s Sarah Khan as its Student of the Month for January 2018, Mariner’s Lyosha Orozco as its Student of the Month for February 2018, and Kamiak’s Jennifer Paz as its March student of the month.
Cromwell is an outstanding student, gifted musician who is involved with orchestra leadership, and is a dedicated athlete on the cross-country team.
Khan, a 4.0 student, is active in band as a Flute Section Leader and is the co-president of the Mariner SAT Prep Group. She has earned a number of awards including Musical Excellence Award, Lamp of Knowledge Award and AP Scholar Award, to name a few. A volunteer in the school’s writing center, Khan enjoys helping other students overcome struggles with writing and aims to help them learn the joy of writing not just for academic purposes, but for themselves.
Orozco is a member of the band’s leadership team serving as a section leader and trumpet tutor. Her tutoring skills have also led her to volunteer as a writing tutor helping with grammar, analysis and other writing skills. She has also volunteered to raise money for band trips to help ease the fees of other students. In addition, Orozco started a jazz club after school last year that teaches music theory.
Paz volunteers often and single-handedly gathered over 1,000 items for the Kamiak food drive and assisted in the adoption of Kamiak’s eight-child family for “Hope Holidays” gift drive. Paz is also involved in the Knight’s in Action community service club and is dedicated to fostering community service.
The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club meets every Friday at 12:15 p.m. at Shawn O’Donnell’s American Grill & Irish Pub, 122 128th St. SE, Everett. For more information, visit www.semr.org.
