Blindsided by budget l Council Corner

Last updated 4/4/2018 at Noon

When in discussion these past several months it was revealed to us by our finance director that with the projected numbers for the next 10 years we were looking at a huge gap in expenses versus revenues.

With no changes in our revenue model we hit a $1 million general fund gap in late 2020.

If you were like me my initial reaction was, “How did we not know?” and so I asked our finance director that very question.

I appreciated her direct answer: “I did not know until I punched in the numbers.” Michelle answered honestly. Michelle has not quite been here a year.

In fact, the truth is she is our fourth finance director in as many years.

This is not her fault. I am however impressed with how she is stepping up and taking responsibility going forward. And now as a council we must do the same.

As a councilmember, I along with my colleagues, was blindsided by this information. And now it is our responsibility to move forward and ask the questions needed to remedy the outlook with even more transparency to you.

My initial reaction was to look behind and wonder “Why?” and “How did this happen?” but then I realized my role was to figure out how to navigate our way through and to not get trapped in looking too far back.

So that is where I plant my feet and plan to step forward.

The reality is we have to get clear about our priorities and how that shows up in our budget.

I believe that our council collectively as a whole 100 percent has your best interest at heart and together we can come up with a way to provide the services you expect and inform you on the cost of those you desire.

The first step for us as a council is to get really clear on the next right step...and that is why we are meeting again for a council workshop to focus on your priorities and how we can most effectively look to balance those as we make decisions going forward.
