Mariner Unified basketball finishes strong at state

Last updated 3/21/2018 at Noon

The Mariner Unified basketball team qualified for the Special Olympics Winter Games in Wenatchee for the second year in a row.

Mariner was one of five teams from across the state to qualify in their division and they were given a first-round bye to start the tournament. The team went 0-2 in hard-fought games and finished in fourth place. The team received lot of praise from the audience. The game directors, scoreboard operators, referees, and spectators from other teams went out of their way to compliment the student-athletes on how they conducted themselves throughout the tournament: thoughtful, inclusive, and accepting of others. “These kids did an amazing job of representing the Mukilteo School District in a positive way,” said Austin Richard, Mariner Unified basketball coach.

Congratulations also go to unified basketball players Melany Hernandez and Agwin Atem for being selected for the first all-state girl’s Special Olympics basketball team. The team will represent Washington at the 2018 USA Special Olympic Games on July 1 to 6 in Seattle and will play in the national Special Olympics basketball tournament against several all-female teams from across the United States.
