Letter: To the leaders, parents and daughters of Girl Scout Troop #43476

December 20, 2017

“Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.” – The Girl Scout Mission Statement.

Flashback 15 years, and you would have found me reciting the Girl Scout Promise and Law with my troop.

I still remember all of the words.

Some are: “Serve my country,” “Friendly and helpful,” “Considerate and caring” and “Make the world a better place.”

I am proud to have been raised as a Girl Scout.

This week my front yard was “flocked” by plastic pink flamingos nestled amongst my Christmas lights.

It is quite a hilarious sight, but the intent of this cute and light-hearted prank is not funny.

Along with the flamingos was a note.

In summary it said: The flamingos have gathered on my property to roost, in an attempt to help the Girl Scout troop go to Camp Pi’iholo in Maui. Unless quickly removed, they could roost on my property for a very long time. For removal of these pesky pink birds, mark the check box of your donation amount ($20 suggested) and call the individual below.

Does the “flocking” of my yard build girls of character? Did it demonstrate leadership? Did this in any way serve my community? Was it friendly? Helpful? Considerate? Did it make the world a better place?

This method of fundraising is not what Girl Scouts represents.

Troop #43476, I am embarrassed by your decisions and how you have represented the Girl Scouts of America.

I love the holiday season. There is abundant joy and the spirit of giving is strong. But many people are hurting and struggling.

I can donate to the food bank to help a family enjoy a Christmas meal together.

I can “adopt” a child off a giving tree, to make sure he or she has a gift to open on Christmas morning.

Or... I can donate $20 to send a group of young girls to experience the Hawaiian culture in Maui. The decision is clear to me.
