Progress report on Mukilteo’s Multimodal Project

Work crews are continuing to make progress on the first phase of the Mukilteo Multimodal Project.

The phase is set to construct the trestle and bridge seat.

As of now, crews have installed over 150 piles at the work site of the new Mukilteo ferry terminal. They have also removed concrete walls from the former tank farm.

“Crews are now focusing on installing the 38 remaining piles before constructing other elements of the trestle and pouring the bridge seat,” Taylor Knowles, a communications lead of the Mukilteo Multimodal Project said in an email. “Trestle and bridge seat construction is expected to be complete in summer 2018. The new terminal is scheduled to open for service in late 2019.”

According to the Washington State Depearment of Transportation’s website, the Mukilteo/Clinton ferry route is Washington State Ferry’s busiest route for vehicle traffic.

It also has the second highest annual ridership. More than four million people used it in 2015.

During the peak commuting period in the afternoon, walk-on ridership is expected to increase 124 percent from 2010 to 2040.

WSDOT’s website also says that, “The Mukilteo terminal has not had significant improvements since the early 1980s and components of the facility are aging and do not meet current seismic standards. The current terminal layout makes it difficult for passengers to get in and out of the terminal and contributes to traffic congestion, safety concerns and conflicts between vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The new terminal will improve operations and multimodal connections and safety.”

According to an email from Knowles, Mukilteo citizens and ferry passengers can expect the existing terminal to remain open and operational throughout the construction of the new terminal.

Trucks for the project will be limited to 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays for deliveries and pick-ups.

The water around the project area is restricted to divers and other recreational users during the construction. There are signs around the work zone that must be obeyed.

The crew will be starting to use an impact hammer to install pipes, which will be louder than any construction on the project to date.

Citizens in the area will likely hear a loud “pinging” noise when from the strike of the impact hammer. Noise levels will reach up to 90 decibels at the closest residences, which is roughly the same level as a nearby lawnmower or motorcycle. The impact hammer work is currently scheduled to take place between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and will last through December.

The current timeline is set to have the new terminal open by the end of 2019 with the project finishing in mid 2020.
