Letter: Candidate clarification

November 1, 2017

I would like to thank all of the sponsors, production team, volunteers and most importantly those who were in attendance. An informed community is best prepared to solve the difficult issues that our city faces. I can honestly say that both my opponent and myself care deeply about the future of Mukilteo moving this city forward. I am honored to be running against Anna and I would like to restate my respect for the type of campaign that we have run.

In the last few months I have had the privilege to visit so many of you at your homes and businesses and heard your stories, ideas and concerns.

Several of the issues that matter most to our residents were brought up in the debate forum last Wednesday.

Though we were not all asked the same questions, I did appreciate the variety that were asked.

This past week, I have been asked to clarify my position on illegal immigration as some in attendance were confused as to my response to a particular question about the "welcoming city."

To be clear, I think Mukilteo needs to be welcoming to all and I don't believe we need to spend time on a policy to determine a nickname for such purpose.

I think that if we fix our traffic issues, increase recreational opportunities for all generations and take a serious look at where we spend our money we will be a more welcoming city.

When I say welcome to all, I mean that everyone is welcome to come here as long as they plan to be a contributing member of the community and obey the laws and codes that all Mukilteo Residents are required to follow.

The federal government oversees immigration issues and I don't feel that it is the role of the city council to interpret or pick and choose which laws they will follow.

The council has a very specific role to play in city government and it should remain focused on that. If someone is in our city and is not following the rules and laws of the state, city or federal government then they should be dealt with according to the existing laws.

Together we can move Mukilteo forward!

James Yoo,

Candidate Pos. 1
