Monroe beats Mariner | Football

October 11, 2017

Mariner suffered its worst loss of the season to a team that many regard as the best in the league.

Monroe defeated the Marauders 51-13 in a Wesco 4A football game Friday, Oct. 6, at Goddard Stadium.

“Obviously, they came out and dominated the game,” Mariner coach Mark Stewart said.

The Bearcats (4-0 in the league, 6-0 overall) had outscored their previous five opponents 250-50, including a 57-0 rout of Glacier Peak (2-2, 3-3), the Marauders’ next opponent.

Mariner remains in the hunt for one of the league’s four playoff spots.

“Our goal is to get to the playoffs,” Stewart said. “We have to win the next three games to go to the playoffs. We have to line up and get it done.”

After the Grizzlies, the Marauders close out against Mount Vernon (1-3, 2-4) and Jackson (2-2, 2-3). Mariner currently is tied for sixth place with the Bulldogs.

Senior running back Romelo Mangum scored on a 68-yard run and sophomore defensive back Tyrell Waverly returned an interception 40 yards for a score.

Mariner’s offense had some opportunities to move the ball against Monroe but wasn’t able to execute.

“We overthrew some balls,” Stewart said. “They were blitzing a lot. It’s a matter of standing in there and making a throw.”

Glacier Peak is coming off back-to-back losses to Monroe (57-0) and Lake Stevens (63-14).

Junior quarterback Ayden Ziomas did lead the Grizzlies to a pair of victories over Cascade (40-27) and Jackson (48-41) to start league play.

Stewart said that the Marauders need to play sound fundamental defense against Ziomas, who is effective both passing and running with the ball. The Glacier Peak junior quarterback threw for 481 yards and ran for 82 and accounted for all seven touchdowns against the Timberwolves.

“We need to reestablish our run game,” Stewart added. “We didn’t have enough sustain drives (against Monroe). You’ve got to be able to do that.”

Mariner takes on Glacier Peak at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 13, at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Snohomish.
