Rotary Club honors Students of the Month

October 11, 2017

The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club has named ACES High School's Jorden Johnson as its Student of the Month for September 2017 and Nikolas (Nik) Hammond as its Student of the Month for October 2017.

Both were recognized for their accomplishments at a recent Rotary Club meeting at Shawn O’Donnell’s Restaurant & Irish Pub in Everett.

Johnson enjoys riding his longboard and doing tricks on his BMX bike. He stays busy with his schoolwork, plus raising his 1 1/2-year-old daughter, Astrid Ray.

ACES has been a good fit for Johnson. This year, he was asked by principal Amy Montanye-Johnson to participate in the interview committee for two new para educator positions. The committee was formed so Johnson and another student could provide their feedback on the new hiring process.

His favorite class is AP Government with Mr. Kearney. Johnson said he really enjoys Mr. Kearney’s teaching style.

Johnson is also a mentor in ACES “Connect” program. The program’s goal is to help incoming sophomores transition to high school by helping them feel welcome and let them know where they can find support at school.

For the past two years, Johnson has been attending Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center’s welding program. He is hopeful that after he graduates from ACES, he can continue in the welding profession; possibly working at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton.

Hammond is 17 years old. He enjoys reading science fiction, fantasy, and horror; especially Stephen King novels. He also likes to play video games and listen to music. One of his other pastimes is learning to make and fix computers.

Transferring to ACES has been beneficial for Hammond. He has found that the smaller classes and getting extra help from their teachers have helped him improve his grades.

Hammond also attends Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center in the afternoons studying electronic engineering.

After graduation from ACES, Hammond plans to apply for scholarships and attend Edmonds Community College next fall. He is interested in electrical engineering or possibly looking at the medical or legal career field. He said he wants to keep his options open.

The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club meets every Friday at 12:15 p.m. at Shawn O’Donnell’s American Grill & Irish Pub, 122 -128th St SE, Everett. For more information, visit
